What Should Tutors Do When a Student Is Struggling?

When a student keeps struggling, giving more worksheets is rarely enough. The tutor needs to identify why the difficulty is happening and change the teaching response accordingly.

1. Identify the type of problem

Separate conceptual gaps from careless mistakes, language difficulty, weak memory, poor working habits, exam technique and low confidence.

2. Check older foundations

A current topic may be difficult because the student never mastered an earlier skill. Trace the error backwards until you find the missing prerequisite.

3. Reduce the difficulty temporarily

Use simpler examples to rebuild the idea, then increase complexity gradually once the student can explain the basic concept.

4. Change the explanation

If the same explanation has failed several times, repeating it louder or slower may not help. Try diagrams, worked examples, analogies, manipulatives or a different sequence.

5. Make the student do the thinking

Avoid rescuing the student too quickly. Use prompts and partial hints so the learner completes more of the reasoning independently.

6. Practise the exact weak skill

Targeted practice is usually more efficient than broad worksheets that mix many unrelated skills.

7. Track small signs of progress

Look for fewer repeated mistakes, improved explanations, faster working or greater confidence, not only test scores.

8. Discuss persistent concerns with the parent

Explain what you have observed, what you have tried and what you recommend next. Do not diagnose medical or learning conditions unless you are qualified to do so.
