When Should Parents Change Tutor?
Changing tutor should not be the first response to one disappointing test. At the same time, staying too long with a poor fit can waste time and reduce a child’s confidence.
Give reasonable time for adjustment
Unless there is a serious concern, allow several lessons for the tutor to understand the student.
Consider changing tutor when...
Your child repeatedly does not understand the explanations
If the tutor has tried several approaches and the child remains consistently confused, the teaching style may not fit.
The tutor is unreliable
Frequent late cancellations or unpredictable scheduling can disrupt learning.
Lessons lack preparation or direction
If every lesson consists of random worksheets without attention to weaknesses, reconsider.
Your child is afraid to ask questions
Tuition should be a place where the student can expose gaps safely.
There is no evidence of progress over a reasonable period
Progress is broader than marks, but there should eventually be some improvement.
Do not change tutors simply because...
- one examination score drops;
- the tutor gives honest feedback that your child needs more practice;
- the tutor refuses to promise a grade;
- the child dislikes being challenged.
Before making the change
Talk to the tutor. Some issues are fixable—for example, pace, homework load or communication style.
