What to Ask a Tutor Before the First Lesson

A short conversation before tuition begins can prevent many misunderstandings. Parents do not need to conduct a formal interview, but a few focused questions can help confirm whether the tutor is suitable.

1. What levels and subjects do you currently teach?

Recent, relevant experience with your child’s exact level and subject is important.

2. How would you assess my child in the first few lessons?

A good tutor should have some way to identify strengths and gaps—through schoolwork, recent test papers, diagnostic questions or observation.

3. What does a typical lesson look like?

Listen for structure: review mistakes, explain concepts, guided practice, independent practice and homework planning.

4. How do you handle repeated mistakes?

This reveals whether the tutor tries to identify the misconception behind the mistake.

5. What materials will you use?

Ask whether the tutor uses school materials, assessment books, past-year papers, self-prepared notes or a combination.

6. How much homework do you usually give?

Homework should be realistic alongside schoolwork and other commitments.

7. How will you update me on progress?

Agree on a communication style that respects the student’s independence while keeping parents informed.

8. What is your rate and what counts as lesson time?

Confirm hourly rate, normal lesson duration, payment arrangement and any additional charges.

9. What is your cancellation or rescheduling practice?

Discuss how much notice is expected and what happens if either side needs to reschedule.

10. How long are you likely to be available?

Continuity can matter for PSLE, O-Level or A-Level preparation.

11. What should my child prepare for the first lesson?

The tutor may ask for recent examination papers, school worksheets, textbook chapters or teacher feedback.

12. What do you expect from my child?

A productive tuition relationship is two-way.
